AGO Infinity Mirrors Engagement Session

Trish + Olivier

Thursday March 29th, 2018

A very last minute plan, but an exciting one… I headed to the AGO to photograph a very interesting and fun engagement session for Trish + Olivier at the Infinity Mirrors Exhibit by Yayoi Kusama. This was such a fun opportunity to join a couple (who were absolutely amazing) and see what we could manage to get in 20-30 seconds. Each room was timed by an AGO employee with a stopwatch, and a knock on the door for a 5-second warning. I will say this way was extremely efficient and made the long lines go by very quickly.

It was an interesting shoot considering the different lighting, the long lines (a lot of anticipation going into the room), and the limited room for movement. Which basically made this shoot one of the hardest I’ve ever done. But it was SO fun! The Infinity Mirrors exhibit made for an absolutely gorgeous place to do an engagement shoot, and extremely unique. And I could not be happier that Trish and Olivier asked me to document this part of their love story.

While in line they told me the adorable story of how they became engaged. Trish told me the proposal story in her own words (which is enough to make you cry!)

“Olivier has a gift for creating magical moments, and his proposal was a testament of that!

It happened two years ago on my birthday and totally took me by surprise. I thought my best present that year would be the fact that, after 13 months of long distance (because a new job had taken me from our home in Edmonton to Toronto), he was finally able to follow me across the country – again. His first cross-Canada move had been to Edmonton from Montreal, where we met while I was there studying French. I knew then that this man was a keeper!

Little did I know, though, that he’d concocted a plan to make this birthday the best I’ve ever had. He flew in that day and picked me up from a spa day with flowers waiting in the backseat. Then we hit the road, to a charming little cottage in the country that he’d secretly rented for the next three nights.

When we first arrived, I must admit I was a little apprehensive. There was no running water (which meant a “compostable” toilet!)…and no heat. It was March. So it was cold! I nervously perched myself on the bed, but within a matter of minutes he lit dozens of candles and started a fire that warmed the place right up! He then cooked me a delicious dinner on the BBQ, and I couldn’t ask for anything more. But after our candlelit feast in this cozy wood cabin, he pulled out another gift: a book he made me with the help of my family and friends. In it, they shared their favourite photos and memories of me. It had me in tears instantly, and also made me laugh. It was the sweetest thing anyone has ever given me. As I reached the last two pages of the book – which said, “The End…But it’s really just the beginning” – I was still completely oblivious to what was waiting for me.

It wasn’t until I closed the book and looked up, that I saw he was proposing. I’ll never forget the look on his face and how I felt when he asked me to marry him (he even learned how to ask me in Polish, which is my mother tongue). It was such a special moment and one I will forever cherish. I feel incredibly lucky to spend the rest of my days creating more magical memories with this rare gem, my beautiful Quebecker.”

These two were the absolute sweetest and I can’t thank them enough for being their authentic, goofy selves and just giving this session their all!
